TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Prepaid College Foundation and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation have sealed a partnership worth nearly $100,000 to equally fund 4-year Florida University Plan scholarships for four students joining the fall 2020 freshman class at Nova Southeastern University.
These scholarships are part of the Foundation’s Legacy Challenge Match Scholarship Program that pays tribute to a noteworthy citizen, cause or organization that exemplifies education excellence and/or community or state service. Each scholarship will be awarded to a student who is an advocate for the protection of our ocean and shows potential in leading future generations in this vital effort. The need-based scholarships aim to alleviate some financial burden for students pursuing an education in marine science. Students can apply here by August 9. Winners will be selected August 21, 2020.
“We are so honored to build this partnership between the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Florida Prepaid College Foundation,” Dr. Guy Harvey said. “It’s vital to the future preservation of the marine environment to have more students studying marine science and conservation and ultimately making it their career. This is a great opportunity to inspire bright young minds and we sincerely appreciate the support of the FPCF in this endeavor.”
Over the last 30 years, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation has been documenting the natural behavior of animals for educational opportunities. At the Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) at Nova Southeastern University, students track and tag wildlife firsthand in order to learn more about the world’s largest ecosystem. You can view other educational resources on the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation website.
With a shared vision for education, this partnership is the beginning of providing even more higher education opportunities for students throughout Florida.
“One of Florida’s greatest attributes is our waterways and the marine life who call them home, so it is an honor to support marine science students through these scholarships,” said Foundation Director Cynthia O’Connell. “By teaming up with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, both organizations benefit by providing more students with the opportunity of a college education in this important field.”
The Legacy Challenge Match Scholarship Program has awarded 26 scholarships already this year for a total of $290,000. Since inception in 2018, the Legacy Scholarship Program has exceeded $581,000 in funding through dollar-for-dollar matches with donor organizations throughout Florida.
